The Ottawa Fury are pleased to announce that Martin Vickerton and Andrew Rigby will be returning for the Fury Men’s 5th Anniversary season and will be joined by fellow Brit Liam Maloney. Both Vickerton and Rigby played a vital role in the Fury’s success from a year ago and, like many returning players, have some unfinished business to take care of in making the playoffs.
Martin Vickerton, better known to teammates and fans a ‘Vicks’, r eturns for his third season with the Fury looking to continue his dominance in the Fury midfield. In 2008, the native of Derbyshire, England tallied 4 goals and 1 assist with the Fury including one of the biggest goals of the season in a 1-1 draw with Cape Cod. “Martin Vickerton is a fighter and a born winner. Martin has a tremendous attitude and competes and wants to win in everything he does. He has an educated left foot which was massive for us last year,” noted Fury PDL Head Coach Stephen O’Kane. As a junior at Longwood University Vicks helped the Lancers to an 8-8-4 record and led the team with 6 goals and 6 assists in 19 games his most productive season thus far at Longwood. Martin was a regular in the Fury’s starting-11 last season and was the only Fury to appear in all 16 games.
Andrew Rigby, a native of Nottingham, England will make Ottawa his summer home for a second consecutive season. In his first year with the Fury, Rigby chipped in with 4 assists, but always had the ability to provide calmness in the Fury midfield and played in a pivotal in the Fury’s offence, ranked 5th in the League in 2008. “Andrew Rigby was an invaluable player in our squad last year. His skill, vision and eye for a killer pass are integral components in what we want to accomplish this year,” said Coach O’Kane. Rigby has had training stints with various English Clubs and has more recently played for British sides Long Eaton United (2009) and Rushden & Diamonds (2007/08) and Swiss side Windisch FC.
Liam Maloney will look to replicate his success while at the University of Towson for the Fury. The Liverpool, England native had a standout rookie season leading the Tigers to a 8-5-4 record, was named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region 2nd Team, the All-CAA 2nd Team, the CAA All-Rookie Team and was named CAA Rookie of the Week twice all the while tallying 7 goals and 4 assists to leading his tea m in scoring. Last season Maloney starred for the PDL New England Division Champion Cape Cod Crusaders, leading the team with 7 goals and 1 assist. “Liam is a nightmare to play against and a nightmare to coach against last year scoring 2 goals in 3 games against us,” remarked O’Kane. “I am very grateful that I have the chance to coach him this season for the Fury as he is a very good finisher and a crafty goal scorer.”
The task for these three players is simple – make the playoffs. While Vickerton and Rigby already have bitter tastes from last season to remind them of their task, don’t expect it to take long for newcomer Liam Maloney to be driven by the same passion. |
