Fury Women open season with 3-0 win over the Avalanche

[2007.05.26 - OTTAWA, ON]  Ottawa score comfortable victory over Hamilton in home opener

The Ottawa Fury opened their W-League season with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Hamilton Avalanche this afternoon at Keith Harris Stadium. An own goal and a marker from Carmelina Moscato gave the Fury a 2-0 lead at half-time and a second half goal from Leah Robinson secured the three goal victory.

The Fury started the game brightly and began to take control of the game with Leah Robinson and Stacey Stocco prominent in many of the Fury attacks. Kelly Parker shot wide after 4 minutes and three minutes later a cross from Annie Hamel was headed onto the crossbar by Stacey Stocco. The Fury took the lead after 15 minutes when a clever angled free kick from Leah Robinson was headed into her own net by the Avalanche midfielder Leslie Martin. Kelly Parker went close soon thereafter before Leah Robinson struck a post with another free kick. Heather MacDougall shot over for the Avalanche and fine save by new Fury goalkeeper Vanessa Philips-Bosshart kept the score at 2-0 heading into the half.

The Fury took their foot off the pedal a little at times in the second half allowing Hamilton to have a higher share of the possession. Kelly Parker forced Avalanche keeper Rosanne Couture into a save before teeing up the ball for Leah Robinson to shoot high into the net at the 75th minute. From this point the Fury were able to cruise to a comfortable three goal victory. Stocco and Chiara Greco were booked late on after a brief scuffle. A shut-out for Philips-Bosshart on her Fury debut and a very confident display at the back from two other newcomers, Jenny Jeffers and Rachael Axon.

The Fury Men will continue their opening weekend tomorrow when they play the top of the table Long Island Rough Riders in a 6:00 PM kick off at Carleton University. The Fury Women will be at home on Saturday June 2nd when they take on the Laval Comètes in their second game of their season. Kick off is 6:00 PM.
