Fury stop Avalanche 7-1

[2007.06.16 - Hamilton, ON]  Debutant Jodie Taylor nets a hat-trick for Ottawa at Hamilton

Striker Jodie Taylor, playing in her first game for Ottawa, scored a hat-trick as the Fury cruised to a 7-1 win at BrianTimmins Stadium in Hamilton. The win extends the Fury’s opening season win streak to four games.  Two goals from Annie Hamel and markers from Kelly Parker and Leah Robinson complete the list of scorers.

On a hot sunny afternoon in Hamilton, the Fury took the lead at the 5th minute mark when Jodie Taylor wasted no time in netting her first Fury goal. The Avalanche failed to clear a corner kick from Anna Laue and Taylor was on the spot to slot the ball home. 4 minutes later, Taylor turned provider setting up Annie Hamel to shoot low past Rosanna Couture in the Avalanche net.

The Fury played very attractive possession soccer in the first half; their player movement and passing game cutting open the Avalanche defence. In the 21st minute, and for the second game in a row, Leah Robinson scored direct from a free kick after Carmelina Moscato had been brought down just outside the penalty box. The Avalanche were thwarted twice by fine saves from Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart. On the first occasion she saved a point blank header from Leslie Martin following a corner kick and then she magnificently tipped a Nicole Jagt  shot bound for the top corner of the net over the bar. The score at half time was 3-0 to the Fury.

At the start of the second half, the Fury were a little sloppy and an errant pass from Robinson in the 51st minute allowed Alison Heydorn to shoot past Erin McNulty who had taken over keeper duties at half time. The Fury regained control of the game and as the Avalanche tired would go on to score four more goals in the second half. Taylor, who had a fine debut, set up Hamel for her second goal in the 65th minute and them scored herself in the 76th minute. Kelly Parker converted when put through by a fine pass from Marie-Eve Nault and then Taylor helped herself to a hat trick from a pass from Parker. The latter three goals came in the space of two minutes.

Fury coach Frank Lofranco made numerous substitutions in the second half as the Fury rested some players in preparation for their Sunday afternoon game in Laval against the Cometes. The Fury improved their record to 4-0-0.
