Fury Extend Winning Streak to Five in Laval

[2007.06.17 - Ottawa, ON]  Rachael Axon goal downs Cometes 2-1

England Under-21 international Rachael Axon scored in the 78th minute direct from a corner kick to extend the Fury’s opening winning streak to five games this afternoon as the Fury edged the Cometes 2-1 in W-League play in Laval.

The Fury got off to a fast start when Carmelina Moscato caught the Laval defence napping  with a shot into the corner of the net in the first minute of play following good approach work by Jodie Taylor and Kelly Parker. The Fury took charge of the game early on and a Moscato header was cleared off the goal line following a corner from Anna Laue in the 9th minute. Two minutes later Leah Robinson set Taylor free down the left and Moscato met Taylor’s cross with a firm header which sailed over the bar.

The Cometes worked themselves back into the game with Melissa Lesage and Anne-Marie Lapalme prominent. Two long range shots from Lapalme were easily handled by Vanessa Bosshart-Phillips in the Fury goal. Just before half time the Fury went close on two occasions. First, Taylor’s shot was saved by Marie-Pierre Bilodeau in the Cometes goal and then Jenny Jeffers went close with an overhead kick following a corner. The Fury led 1-0 at the half.

Following a hot sunny afternoon game in Hamilton on Saturday, the Fury began to tire in the second half and would soon lose Kelly Parker to injury. The Cometes capitalized and drew level when Annie Hamel conceded a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Cindy Walsh converted the kick to tie the game at one.

Fury coach Frank Lofranco made some adjustments to try and regain control of the game in midfield. Rachael Axon moved from the back line and gradually the game began to swing back in the Fury’s favour.  Hamel headed wide from an Axon corner kick on the 57th minute but in the 78th minute another Axon corner kick would prove decisive. Axon swung in a corner kick which deceived Bilodeau and entered the net off the post and crossbar.

Laval had a great chance when a cross field pass found Emilie Mercier on the right. Aided by a good bounce she swept past defender Zoe Avner only to sail her shot over the bar with only Bosshart-Phillips to beat. The Fury rode their good fortune and played out the final minutes of the game without further incident. The Fury improved their record to 5-0-0.

The Fury Women return home to take on the star-studded Jersey Sky Blue side on Wednesday June 20th; kick off 7:00 PM.
