It has been half a decade of elite soccer in Ottawa for the Fury PDL squad and as they enter into their 5th season the future continues to shine brightly. Their brief history has yet to see them reach the post-season, although last season they were unlucky - missing the playoffs on a tiebreaker rule of head-to-head meetings with Newark. Despite this misfortune, 2008 was their most successful season and with a core group from last season looking to return for 2009 expectations are very high for the Fury as they look to solidify their first post-season birth.

The Fury was awarded a PDL expansion franchise in October of 2004 to begin play in the 2005 season. The Fury would play out of the Northeast Division against Albany, Brooklyn, Cape Cod, Reading, Rhode Island, Ocean City, Vermont and Westchester – many of who have become familiar foes to the Fury since their inaugural season. Colin McCurdy was named the team’s first head coach who bolstered a line-up with lots of local talent including current PDL player and Fury graduate Jason Blake and current Fury Academy Coach Christian Hoefler. The Fury finished 3rd in their division with an impressive 9-7-0 record – certainly something to build upon for their second season.

Year two featured many familiar faces and continued to bolster some strong local talent. The season finished far too early for the 2nd year team as a 1-5-3 start could not be erased despite finishing the season 6-2-0. The Fury finished second in their division, but their disastrous start was unforgiving as they were unable to catch an Eastern Conference wild card position.

The 2007 began with great optimism and some British flavour injected into the team. Colin McCurdy gave way to Chris Roth who took over as head coach and had one goal in mind – make the playoffs! The Fury were 2-2-3 out of the gate, but finished a dismal 3-8-5 well out of a playoff spot. One bright spot was that the Club’s defense continued to improve having only conceded 21 goals over 16 games, problem was they were only able to notch 17 of their own throughout the season.

Last season began with renewed optimism under the infectious enthusiasm of new head coach Stephen O’Kane. O’Kane brought with him a winning culture leading the Algonquin College Thunder to a National Championship in 2006 as well as numerous successes as a head coach in the Fury Youth program including a bronze medal at the prestigious Foyle Cup in Northern Ireland and leading the U17 Boys to the SYL North American Finals, both in 2007. The Fury stumbled out of the gate with losing their first two games and starting 3-3-0 through the first third of the season. The Fury went into their final game of the season having gone 6-0-3 in their last nine games needing a victory to clinch the division title or a tie to capture the wild card. Even though the Fury had defeat Vermont in the previous two meetings, the Voltage had the last laugh defeating the Fury 3-0 and then losing to Cape Cod the next day, which eliminated the Fury from the playoffs. Despite sitting even with Newark in points, the Ironbound Express advanced thanks to their 3-0 victory over the Fury in the second game of the season.

The 2009 Season begins May 29th and 30th for the Fury as they visit Rhode Island and New Hampshire respectively before returning home on Friday, June 5th at 7p.m. against Ocean City and Sunday, June 7th at 6p.m. against Westchester as they look to remain undefeated at home for a second consecutive season.
